The Work
Modern Folk pottery handmade for everyday life and the home.
My goal is to create functional handmade pottery that will be reached for everyday. Created with an emphasis on contemporary takes on primitive, utilitarian forms and decoration. I always have in mind if my pottery feels good, looks pleasing, and functions well. I achieve this through careful attention to detail throughout the process of making a batch of work. This personal creative process is what motivates me to create a cohesive collection of work.
The Artist
Kaitlynn Prickett
I began making pottery for its creative potential, explorative nature, and visual pleasure. Through refining my skills and being humbled by clay with its limits and possibilities, I quickly came to believe how important feel, function, and aesthetic is when manipulating clay into functional vessels.
With these important elements in mind, I have been deeply focused on creating a cohesive body of work for the last five years. In this time, I have developed details and gained inspiration for my pieces, including flowing brush motifs, evolving my forms, and glaze application. I have fired white stoneware, buff stoneware, and porcelain work in my cone 10 electric oxidation kiln in my home studio, as well as a cone 10 natural gas kiln while studying at Kissimmee River Pottery and through my work at Flemington Pottery. My work has been greatly influenced by my time learning under John Fulwood, along with the work of other potters including Elmer Taylor and Bernard Leach. I find these potter’s work continually inspirational to me for their use of decoration and form. I am also influenced by American Folk Art for the use of color, motifs, and simplistic, functional forms.
After learning about the field of ceramics and its processes, in 2019 I started my own business making and selling ceramic wares, Kaitlynn Prickett Ceramics.
